Principals


Brian Walshe brian.walshe@whk.co.nz - Chief Executive

Brian Walshe focuses on all the commercial needs of a growing business, ensuring that your structure is suitable, your business needs are being met and taxation minimised. 

Brian is committed to ensuring that WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe provides prompt responses to your requests and meets your needs.  "Pro-active, straight forward advice is a must for helping people in business", he says.

The skills Brian shares with his clients cover not only the normal business advisory services of accounting and tax, but also management, marketing, administration and strategic planning.  His skills have been a key force in WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe's significant growth since 1988. 

With a focus on "delivery" Brian is committed to ensuring you have the opportunity to grow your business with immediate access to the services and skills of a team who can make a difference.

Married with three children, Brian lives in Eastbourne where he is busy in the community, enjoys boating, fishing, skiing, golf and tramping.


Mike Chan mike.chan@whk.co.nz - Principal

As one of the founding partners, Mike has seen and participated in the spectacular growth WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe has enjoyed right from the beginning. He says it has been achieved in large measure because of the personal service that the partners and team provide at all times.

Mike's areas of expertise include business services, audit and taxation advice, with a special focus on business restructuring, in order to provide both asset protection and efficient tax planning.

When Mike is missing in action, chances are he's indulging his other passion - golf.


Richard Burge richard.burge@whk.co.nz - Principal
Richard heads our tax team, putting his past experience with the Inland Revenue Department to good use, developing tax effective commercial solutions and assisting clients in their dealings with Inland Revenue.

He also has considerable experience with the offering of securities to the public, including the preparation of prospectuses in compliance with securities law, regulations and financial reporting standards.

He is a regular presenter and author on tax related topics and had had many articles published in industry publications.

Richard is also responsible for the general accounting and commercial needs of many of our clients.


Les Foy les.foy@whk.co.nz - Principal
Les is responsible for further developing the firm's audit, financial management and consultancy practice.

His diverse experience covers both the government and private sectors, spanning a range of industries including, banking and finance, insurance, retail, investment, transportation, property, electricity, manufacturing and services. 

Before joining WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe, Les spent several years in Wellington developing his own management consultancy practice, which included clients operating in the commercial and government sectors.

Prior to that Les gained substantial financial management, external audit and internal audit experience as a partner in KPMG and Arthur Andersen.


Russell Holmes russell.holmes@whk.co.nz - Principal

Russell has been involved in all aspects of the business advisory field since 1985 with several years experience at Coopers & Lybrand before joining WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe.  He has a vast cross section of skills and works extensively with a wide range of clients providing commercial and practical advice.

He has specific expertise across numerous trades based industries as well as the motor vehicle and hospitality industries.  Outside of his comprehensive tax and compliance knowledge he specialises in management accounting and KPI's, business benchmarking, financial analysis, budgeting & cash flow advice, business startups, business acquisitions, feasibility studies and business structures.

He has also had significant involvement in systems and process design, development and implementation, particularly with regards to financial reporting systems.

Russell believes that key components of developing, growing and maintaining a successful business include having the tools, systems and sound proactive advisers alongside to ensure good information is available to assist with making positive business decisions.  These are areas that he and the team at WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe can specifically assist clients with.

Outside the office Russell has three young children who tend to keep him fairly well occupied although he does enjoy fitting in the odd round of golf when time permits.  Other interests include tennis, rugby, motor sport and music.


Gabriela Newman gabriela.newman@whk.co.nz - Associate Principal

Gabriela heads up our accounting systems and software implementation team and consults on best practice for internal systems management with an emphasis on MYOB implementation, support and the designing of reports for managing performance.

In addition to accounting and tax services, Gabriela assists clients with business plans, helping them to set and achieve their goals.

Prior to joining WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe, Gabriela gained extensive practical commercial experience through financial control and management roles within the hospitality, film, theatre and wholesale sectors.

Gabriela is very much a people person.  She enjoys helping people realise their full business potential and is widely respected for her fun, energetic and enthusiastic know-how, and can-do attitude to business and life.

When not working, Gabriela can usually be found enjoying her family, playing competitive squash, or horse-riding.

Senior Associate


Bruce Dring bruce.dring@whk.co.nz - Senior Associate

Bruce joined WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe in 1994 after 10 years as a Wellington based Partner with one of the "Big Four" firms. He also has extensive international experience gained primarily in the UK and Canada.

He has developed a specialisation in business mergers, acquisitions and corporate restructuring.

Bruce's wide experience in valuations and due diligence work is often utilised by WHK Sherwin Chan & Walshe clients when buying or selling businesses.

Bruce also provides ongoing commercial advice to a variety of clients at a senior level.
